DAY 14    APRIL 24  2011
Moving around but staying close together.
The beak on the young birds looks large and knobbly,
and will stay that way for several weeks.
It is one way to tell how old the bird is.

Compare the mother's beak to the young ones' beaks
how much smoother it is.

They are moving around much more, about 30 cm from their nest.
Their legs are not yet very strong.
They need to grow and develop more.

Even though they are moving around a lot more,
they always stay together.

They are noticing the sound of my camera.

The younger pair, eyes more open.

They are also moving around a little bit.

You can really begin to notice the colour difference
between the two babies.

DAY 13   APRIL 23   2011
Growing more and more independant.
The parents perching, taking a break.

Getting stronger every day.

Filling out.

Heads up and looking around.

The younger pair.

Feathers showing more.

DAY 12   APRIL 22  2011
Awake all day and feathers fuller.
The parents don't sit on them any more.

Their feathers can keep them warm now.

They are about 5 cm. high and 8 - 9 cm long now.
When they hatched they were about 1.3 cm high and 2.5 cm long.

The younger pair.

Mom eats all the time to be able to feed her young.

Heads in again!

DAY 11   APRIL 21  2011
More feathers, more awake.
Looking quite bright-eyed, at 10 and 11 days old.

The older baby is the nearer one -
it's feathers are a little more fluffed out.

Can you see which one is the older?

The babies are moving - circling on the spot.
They don't move away from each other or from the same spot.

The younger set.
These were hatched out on Days 5 and 6,
so they are 5 and 6 days old now.

 Some feathers coming in.
The dark baby was hatched with more down, (very soft feathers).
He is getting real feathers now.

Dad is coming to take over for awhile.

Mom is going off to take a break.

Tucking them in.

Heads warm, tails cool.

Mom checking up on things.

DAY 10   APRIL 20   2011
More awake and moving around.
 About 9:30 am with Mom

The older one is on the right - he is becoming more awake.

 They are moving around more
- sort of in circles, in the same spot.
Today they are not breathing quite as rapidly or heavily.

The left hand baby is the younger - he still
dozes off to sleep frequently.
The other stays awake longer at a time.

The Dad with the younger pair about 6:30 pm

A closer view.

DAY 9   APRIL 19   2011
The younger ones are growing faster now.
The younger pair are taking up more space now under the Mom.

The feathers are getting fluffier and there are more of them.

Can you see how big and full the food pouch is?
Also how large and knobbly the beaks look.
An adult bird has a slimmer, smoother beak.

Late at night all settled in.

Keeping their heads warm!

DAY 8   APRIL 18  2011
Heavy breathing and more feathers.
The younger pair

Dad still keeps them warm.

They need lots of sleep because they are growing so fast.

They can see more now.
They are still breathing very fast.
It is more difficult to see the ear now.
You can look back to DAY 6 and DAY 7,
to see the ear quite clearly.
